The chemical compounds of a nitrogen fertilizer are often transformed. Some fertilizers actually need to be transformed before plants can use them.
For example, chemically organic fertilizers like urea, CO(NH2)2, have to be transformed to inorganic compounds before the plants can absorb their nitrogen.
